Killarney, June 25
It is our last day in Killarney, and we spent the first part of it slowly packing, sorting, and getting taxi, train, and plane connections confirmed and sorted. Nancy is going to be doing 2 shows for QVC, a home shopping network in the UK, tomorrow in London, and will leave for the US a day later than I. However, for the Killarney-Cork and Cork-London Heathrow runs we will be together.
We spent the afternoon viewing Knockreer estate and gardens. The Knockreer section of Killarney National Park is within walking distance of Killarney town. This area was formerly part of the Kenmare Estate which was laid out by Valentine Brown the 3rd Viscount of Kenmare. Deenagh Lodge Tearoom, where we ate lunch, dates back to1834 and was the gate lodge of the Kenmare Estate. The tearoom is a popular haunt with locals and visitors after a stroll in the park. It is located just inside Kings Bridge across from St Mary's Cathedral. Knockreer House, a short walk up the hill, is an education center and is built on the site of the original Killarney House which was destroyed by fire in 1913. The circular walk which is signposted offered excellent views of the Lower Lake, and the McGillcuddy Reeks could be seen in the distance, providing a wonderful panorama of the surrounding countryside.
We have returned to our room this late afternoon, and will be getting an early start tomorrow morning, as a taxi is slated for 6:00 a.m. The sky is lowering, almost as if to tell us it was sorry to see us depart. What an amazing trip it has been! Stay tuned for the next installment: Colorado, July 6-18.
