July 8: Ladysmith, Wisconsin
This was a true candidate for “day of rest” today, although I did wake up at 6:00, showered and dressed and was ready for a breakfast on the run at 8:15. Karen left for Hope Lutheran Church, and then Maureen, as she was slated to sing at today’s 9:00 am service. Wayne and I brought up the rear after a breakfast of muffins, granola, strong coffee, and applesauce. We arrived at 8:45, and sat upstairs where Karen, who plays for all the church services, sits. Maureen also came upstairs, so the four of us were re-united.
The service, with well-known and unknown hymns, was conducted by a man who leads the services of several churches in the area alternatively. Maureen sang “Offertory” by John Ness Beck, and the pastor gave both a children’s and a regular sermon, and then administered the Eucharist. Lovely little church, and afterwards we went into the basement for a Coffee Hour, and we met and conversed with several members of the congregation. Lunch was at home, and then we took a two-hour drive around the town and its surrounding area, photographing interesting silos, farmsteads, trains rushing by (especially welcome was the sound of their whistle-blowers as they sped through the countryside), and active and sidelined train cars, locomotives and cabooses.
Maureen was meeting a number of friends and acquaintances at 3:00 p.m. I decided not to go with her, but stayed with Wayne and Karen and talked about various subjects such as travel, Norway, Germany, and the political situation in the world. We looked at photos, had dinner, and are now waiting for Maureen to come back and let us know all about her meeting with friends and acquaintances. She has been with them for over five hours now, and is probably closing down a restaurant or two. Good, restful day! More tomorrow, as we set out for Eau Claire, Wisconsin! Bye, Sylvia
