August 1: St. Petersburg
Another day of pure sun in the morning, followed by lowering clouds and rain in the afternoon. Again, Nancy and I had a nutritious breakfast of avocado toast and fruit, soft-boiled eggs and some wonderful coffee. Afterwards and while the weather was still beautiful (though becoming warmer and warmer), we made our way to Lake Seminole Park for a 2-mile walk.
Lake Seminole Park is a designated wildlife habitat and sanctuary. Raccoons, alligators, various waterfowl, hawks, bald eagles, black vultures, tortoises/turtles, snakes, etc. reside in this park, and provide many an hour of discovery and wonder to those who slow down and pay attention to its ministrations.
The park has a 2-mile multi-use trail (jogging, hiking, bicycling/inline skating) that winds through a pine flatwoods. A 1-mile cut-off is available for those less vigorous. Lake Seminole also affords hours of pleasure for boaters, jet skiers, water-skiing, fishing, etc. A softball field and volleyball courts are available on a first come, first served basis. Benches and swings are strategically situated for relaxing views of the several ponds and the lake.
There are picnic shelters, a ball field, a boat ramp, fishing opportunities, a multi-purpose trail, playgrounds, and water fountains. Nancy and I did the entire two-mile walk and noticed egrets, blue herons, lizards, and rabbits along the way, along with swamp lilies, water lilies, banana trees, etc., and it was so good to get away and be in the midst of nature once again.
We returned from the hike newly invigorated, and then, together with Jim, had a lunch of kale and spinach salad with strawberries, raspberries, pine nuts, peaches, and a very good mustard / lime dressing, along with freshly baked bread. The rest of the afternoon, Nancy along with Jim went to a doctor’s appointment, while I took a nap and then read. They returned at about 4:30 p.m., and we watched the filmed version of “Sweet Bird of Youth” with Paul Newman and Geraldine Paige before walking to nearby taco restaurant, where I had a Posole-like soup (without the garbanzo beans) and one great soft taco.
Tomorrow, Nancy and I have an appointment to see wild cats in captivity (courtesy of Alexandra’s notification). More as I share pictures of those gallant survivors after we see them tomorrow. Meanwhile, enjoy today’s Facebook pictures. As ever, SV
