August 1-5: Houston

Well, a last missive before I shut town the blogs and photographs for a while.  I have just returned from a lovely five-day visit to Houston to be with the Venables—always a pleasant, relaxing experience.  Discussions, communal meals, watching a good movie together, swimming—all these contributed to a great ambiance and sense of camaraderie among us all.

One of the highlights of my visit was going to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston to see one of their newest design shows, “Joris Laarman Lab:  Design in the Digital Age,” featuring furniture generated by algorithms and designs brought to life by robots.  He and his partner founded this lab in 2004 in Amsterdam, and they work together with engineers, programmers, and craftspeople to reimagine traditional forms in one-of-a-kind ways.  Since photography was allowed, I went a little mad photographing these unique objects, in the hope that those of you who admire unusual and striking design may head off to that museum if you happen to be in Houston in the near future.

This missive ends my blog and Facebook entries for trips completed this summer.  I look forward, God willing, to next summer’s opportunities to add new venues to the mix of places of interest which I look forward to exploring!  As ever, Sylvia V.
